CHAPTER NINE

Noire walked briskly down the hall. It was another hellaciously hot day, and although he had his nose buried in his case files, he wasn't actually reading them. He wanted a fix. He needed a fix. He could practically hear the little jar calling to him from its spot underneath the mattress. All he had to do was get through this session, and then he could get back home. He'd considered bringing them with him so he could take a halfsie immediately after work but didn't want to risk it.

"I'm still in control, I'm still in control," he chanted to himself under his breath. He almost believed it.

He stopped short when he saw Warden Rivera standing in the hallway outside the therapy room.

"What's wrong?" he asked, rushing over. "Did something happen?"

"Unfortunately, I have bad news, Dr. Scarlett," Cesia said with a drawn face. "The Dragon had… an incident with another inmate on the yard yesterday."

"Oh, no." Noire pressed one hand against his mouth. "Was anyone hurt?"

"No, no one was hurt, but he did have a verbal outburst, the first of any kind he's had since being here. Although he didn't attempt to physically assault the other prisoner, he stood quite close, yelling and screaming, in addition to throwing a tennis ball. He had to be restrained. I reported it to Judge Arbour, who wants your statement straight away on what happened."

"Yes, of course. Is he in the therapy room?"

Warden Cesia nodded. "He's ready and waiting."

Noire hurried to the room, pushing the door open to see Dragon sitting sullenly at the metal table, arms folded. He was securely fastened to the table, chair, and floor, but he also noticed a new chain wrapped around his midsection and down his back. Noire shut the door behind him and strode angrily into the center of the room.

"What happened?"

"Nothing."

"I'm not playing these games with you today, Mr. Lawson. What happened?"

"I don't want to talk about it." Dragon poked his bottom lip out even further and, for once, Noire didn't find it attractive. He wanted to slap those lips right off his face.

"Well, you better start talking, because Arbour is going to need a report from me about this. Jesus, Dragonfly." He pressed his fingers to his temples. "You were doing so well. I know you want to get out, and you actually can, you have a real shot at it. So why would you do this?"

Dragon set his jaw, clenching it tight. Noire watched as a muscle ticked angrily in his cheek. The silence stretched on between them for minutes before Dragon spoke again.

"Because the fucker deserved it," he finally said. "There. Satisfied? He deserved it. And he got off lucky. It's only because I want to get out of this place that he's even still alive."

"And what warranted his death, pray tell? Did he step on your shoe? Grab the bread off your plate in the mess hall?" Noire felt a righteous fury rising in him. They'd done so much work, just for him to throw it all away.
